What can I say about Rossini? He gave us lirico-leggiero tenors in stupid disguises. He gave us fierce lady-coloratura. He gave us this piece of flawlessness. His serious operas are also considered some of the most dramatically and musically potent in the pre-Verdi repertoire, and he was so successful, he retired aged 39 to make sassing Wagner a full-time occupation. What a babe.
