Jussi Bjorling and Renata Tebaldi in La Boheme.
Two of the greatest voices ever.
The AMAZING Franco Corelli singing E Lucevan le Stelle in Parma in 1967. This performance may be a bit on the vulgar side but, in fairness, that’s what you want in an opera like Tosca. I think I got an orgasm from listening to the diminuendo starting at 1.55.
Rita Streich sings ‘O mio babbino caro’ from Puccini’s ‘Gianni Schicchi’, 1968.
Since researching Rita Streich for l’autre blog, I have become obsessed with her voice.
So now, I’m going to be posting those who are receiving Opera News Awards next April. It’s an amazing crowd this year. Starting with the amazing soprano Mirella Freni! Here she is singing Mimi’s ‘Donde lieta’ from Puccini’s ‘La Boheme.’ Bolshoi Theater, 1964.

You can watch the very widely-acclaimed production of Puccini’s Il Trittico from Covent Garden conducted by Pappano on BBC iPlayer:
Il Tabarro with Eva-Maria Westbroek and Aleksandrs Antonenko (available til Thursday)
Suor Angelica with Ermonela Jaho (available until Friday)
Gianni Schicchi (will be available on Friday for a week)
Maria Callas and Giuseppe di Stefano in the dress rehearsal of Madama Butterfly. (Chicago, 1955)
Montserrat Caballe, Luciano Pavarotti and Joan Sutherland recording the 1972 recording of Puccini’s Turandot.
This is one of the few Puccini works that really moves me— let alone inspires me to keep listening.
